Portuguese Exams

There are several recognised certificates of Portuguese language available for students who live in the UK.

The first thing to consider before you apply to take any of these exams is to assess your level of language competency.  This is very important because each exam is designed to test the language skills at different levels.

Note that most exams comprises four parts: writing, reading, listening and speaking.   Therefore, exam candidates need to demonstrate they can operate in these four areas of the language at the level required for their exams.

What are the different levels ?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability.    It describes in a comprehensive way what language learners have to learn to do in order to use a language for communication and what knowledge and skills they have to develop so as to be able to act effectively.

The language ability is organised in a six-point scale ( six levels) from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language.   This makes it easy for anyone involved in language teaching and testing, such as teachers or learners, to see the level of different qualifications. It also means that employers and educational institutions can easily compare our qualifications to other exams in their country.

Below, you find a table comparing what Level is required for each exam:
