September 2023 - Study Week Programme

Monday - Cultural Walk Tour: Lisbon, City of Spies

After their morning lessons, students split into two groups; beginners joined an English-speaking guide and Intermediate students joined a cultural tour provided by the very competent guides from Lisbon Walker. Both groups went on the thrilling "Lisbon City of Spies" walking tour, where history comes alive as they delved into the clandestine world of espionage during World War II.

As Portugal remained neutral, Lisbon became a hotspot for spies, with both Allies and Axis powers operating diplomatic services within the city. They explored famous spy hotels, learnt about refugees and European fashion trends, and uncovered the tales of courageous individuals such as the Portuguese consul in Bordeaux. Other highlights covered the riveting stories of double agents, including the legendary Garbo/Arabel, and the real-life inspiration behind James Bond. From Jewish gold to tungsten traffic, every step of this tour unveiled the intrigue and secrecy that once gripped Lisbon's streets.

Tuesday - Workshop: The Making of the stunning Calçada Portuguesa

"Lisbon, a carpet of stone beneath our feet." This is how The New York Times eloquently describes the enchanting Portuguese pavement in their dedicated article. During an exploration of the Portuguese capital, journalist Kathleen Beckett marveled at the echoes of the Age of Discoveries reverberating through the cobblestone streets. In conversation with Luísa Dornellas, director of the Escola Municipal de Jardinagem e Calceteiros, the sentiment of preserving this historical craft was palpable. Established in 1986, this esteemed institution has honed the skills of 224 cobblestone artisans.

Our students had the privilege of immersing themselves in this heritage during a two-hour workshop led by a master cobblestone worker and the school's passionate communication officer, Sra. Ana Margarida Baptista. They delved into the rich history of Portuguese artistic paving, learned the intricate process of pavement creation, explored the various types of cobblestones, and even tried their hand at shaping stones for a street mosaic. It was an extraordinary afternoon, a departure from the ordinary tourist experience, and one our students are unlikely to forget.

Tuesday Evening - Special Bacalhau Dinner!

In Portugal, bacalhau (salted codfish) is revered as a national treasure, yet many students visiting the country may not have the opportunity to savor it or may not know what to expect. That's why, during the study week in Lisbon, our students were treated to a delightful culinary adventure at one of Lisbon's most esteemed bacalhau specialist restaurants. For some, it was their first encounter with this iconic dish!

At the renowned restaurant Laurentina O Rei do Bacalhau, students had the chance to indulge in bacalhau prepared in two mouthwatering ways: oven-baked with olive oil or transformed into a delectable pie with a creamy topping. It was an unforgettable dinner experience, filled with the rich flavors and traditions of Portuguese cuisine.

The ambiance of the restaurant, coupled with the attentive service provided by their staff, ensured that this dinner was nothing short of extraordinary. It was a night to remember, where students not only tasted the essence of Portugal but also created lasting memories of their time in Lisbon!

Wednesday - Conversation Lunch at Casa do Alentejo

Imagine sitting down to a delightful Portuguese conversation lunch at the enchanting tavern nestled within the historic Casa do Alentejo, right in the heart of Lisbon. This wasn't just any lunch - it was a special gathering for intermediate level students eager to immerse themselves in the language and culture. As they savored the delicious Alentejo appetizers, they were surrounded by the rich history of Casa do Alentejo, which celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2023.

Born on June 10, 1923, Casa do Alentejo originally emerged to support Alentejo natives seeking a better life in Lisbon. Over the years, it has transformed into a beacon of advocacy and promotion for the region, its culture, and gastronomy. The tavern itself exudes a relaxed atmosphere, with an open courtyard and terrace where students could unwind and enjoy the ambiance. And who knows, perhaps they were even treated to the soul-stirring melodies of traditional Alentejo music, adding an extra layer of charm to their unforgettable experience.

Wednesday - Treasure Hunt for beginners

Beginner students also had a special afternoon! They embarked on a thrilling treasure hunt through the historical streets of Lisbon. Armed with curiosity and enthusiasm, they set out to uncover hidden secrets and fascinating historical tidbits about the city and its charismatic characters.

Along the way, they interacted with locals, practicing their Portuguese as they inquire about the prices of exquisite objects at Lisbon's finest porcelain and crystal store, Vista Alegre. They stumble upon hidden archaeological remains from the pre-earthquake era, observe street names, and marvel at panoramic views.

As they navigate through the bustling streets, they learn about Lisbon's most intriguing square, Largo de Camões, and other captivating landmarks. With a set of instructions in Portuguese (with helpful English hints), they navigate their way through the designated path, determined to reach the end. And what awaits them at the finish line? A stunning bar overlooking the city, where their teacher awaits with cocktails for the winning pair! It's a fun-filled adventure that combines learning, exploration, and a dash of friendly competition—a truly unforgettable experience in the heart of Lisbon!

Wednesday evening: Mozambican dinner !

On Wednesday evening, students were treated to a memorable Mozambican dinner in Lisbon, hosted at the picturesque and renowned Roda Viva restaurant nestled in the Alfama neighbourhood. Welcomed by the owner, Chamba, whose warm smile and Mozambican hospitality set the tone for the evening, students were delighted to delve into the flavors of Mozambique. From traditional dishes like cachupa and Mozambican curry stew to sampling Mozambican beers, it was an immersive culinary experience.

Beyond simply learning the Portuguese language, this dinner underscored the importance of exploring the diverse cultures influenced by Portuguese heritage. By embracing cultural nuances alongside language study, students gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and complexity of the Portuguese-speaking world. After all, language learning is not just about mastering grammar—it's about connecting with people, traditions, and flavors from around the globe, making the journey all the more enjoyable and enriching!

Thursday - Half-Day Excursion in Mafra, Ericeira and Aldeia Típica José Franco

On Thursday, students embarked on a sensational half-day tour filled with adventure and discovery!

The journey commenced with a delectable lunch overlooking the Atlantic ocean in Ericeira, a charming fishing village in Portugal. After satisfying their taste buds, they strolled along Ericeira's quaint high street, soaking in the village's rustic charm.

Next stop: Mafra, where they marveled at the grandeur of the Palácio de Mafra—a breathtaking palace steeped in history and architectural splendor. With its impressive dimensions and intricate Baroque design, the palace left them in awe of Portugal's rich heritage. The palace holds significant historical and cultural importance as it was commissioned by King John V in the 18th century as a symbol of his wealth and power. Additionally, the palace houses a basilica and a convent, reflecting the religious devotion of the time. Its vast library, with over 36,000 rare books, manuscripts, and other valuable artifacts, makes it one of the most important libraries in Portugal.

But the excitement didn't end there! Their tour continued to the picturesque man-made clay village of José Franco, nestled in Sobreiro near Mafra. Here, the sculptor José Franco's lifelong dedication to clay modeling came to life in a meticulously crafted life-size village, complete with shops, houses, and artisanal workshops, showcasing the region's traditional way of life. As they explored the village, they couldn't help but be transported back in time, reflecting on the disappearing trades and crafts of yesteryears.

A visit to José Franco's ceramic exhibition added the perfect finishing touch to their unforgettable journey—a true feast for the senses and an enriching cultural experience for all ages!
